TITLE: Become an Editor – Magazine Crafting
AGE RANGE: 3rd grade and up
OVERVIEW: Students will be guided through the creation of a thematic personal magazine based on their own interests. The publication will consist of cover pages, advertisements, poetry pages, interviews, editorials, puzzle pages, and other topics. Upon completion, students will have had a firsthand experience of the critiquing process, the revision progress, meeting a deadline structure, and managing a major literary project – from conception to publication.
TITLE: Become a Published Author – A Poetry Workshop
AGE RANGE: 5th grade and up
OVERVIEW: Students will craft a wide variety of various types of form and free-verse poetry, three selections of which will be included in an illustrated, hard-bound class book. During the sessions, student will analyze works of published poets as well as their own. At the conclusion of the course, students will participate in an Author’s Night, in which they will read their work in a public setting and be available to sign autographs afterwards.
TITLE: Become a Published Author - A Reader/Writer Workshop
AGE RANGE: 4th grade and up
OVERVIEW: Students will focus on literary elements of the craft of writing short stories, essays, and novels. Topics such as story structure, character archetypes, setting as character, and narrative traits will be presented. Students will maintain a reading log throughout the length of the course. Class sessions will be comprised of free writing activities, critiquing, brainstorming, and revision techniques. Polished pieces will be included in an illustrated, hard-bound class book. At the conclusion of the course, students will participate in an Author’s Night, in which they will read their work in a public setting and be available to sign autographs afterwards.
TITLE: Multi-Genre Research Paper
AGE RANGE: 4th grade and up
OVERVIEW: Students will be guided through a research-based project on a topic of interest. Upon completion of the course, students will have produced a properly cited document in which information about their topic has been expressed in a variety of creative ways – poetically, artistically, and factually.
TITLE: Games & Gadgets – Picture Book Fun
AGE RANGE: K – 3rd grade
OVERVIEW: Students will enjoy crafts, hands-on projects and games designed to complement a wide variety of contemporary picture books – non-fiction and fiction titles. The creative projects are both entertaining and academically sound. Students will engage in cut and paste projects that teach rhyming, alphabetizing, story structure, character analysis and much more. Each class session will also include a writing/illustration component.
